Hard to narrow down my very favourite film.
Since film making is my chosen career path, this will be a detailed answer.
I gravitate from dark human tragedies such as The Pianist, Schindlers List (as by watching them I gain greater perspective and insight into the breadth of the human experience) to Romantic Comedies such as Notting Hill (which I adore) and Italian Films such as Il Postino, Cinema Paradiso and Malena.
Recently Kokowaah by Til Schweiger is my favourite foreign film. Please try and watch it if you have not, it is subtitled into English. It is an extremely moving, intellectually engaging and insightful film, that delves into the world of a child from dislocated parents. Having a personal connection to that story, I found extreme resonance with this film.
I also love Bollywood films, i am writing a Bollywood intended feature film presently (with the hope to attach Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra) and some of my favourite Bollywood films are 7 Khoon Maaf, Taree Zameen Par, Devdas. I love anything made by Aamir Khan, loved Lagaan and Dhobi Ghaat. Also really enjoyed most of EK THA TIGER (Salman Khan) especially the action sequences. Awesome!
My favourite Bollywood film is Hum Dhil De Chuke Sanam (Salman Khan, Aishveryaa Rai and Ajay Devgan). A very beautiful love story. I enjoyed TALAASH starring Aamir Khan the narrayive structure was very compelling, especially for a 'Bollywood' film. I watched BARFI with my eldest daughter. It is the most amazing Indian (Bollywood) film that I have seen, speaks about how at the core of the human condition there is the need for love, a fundamental human need. Please try and watch it.
Having stated that my favourite films are character driven/ focused foreign language films and studio indie films. Stories like Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, Whiplash, Erin Brokovich, The Suid and the Whale, Notting Hill, Lost in Translation, Amores Perros, Black Swan, Pulp Fiction are some examples. For my Masters in Screenwriting (Victorian College of the Arts- Melbourne University), my major work is a biopic of sorts of Elvis. The tonal references are The Wrestler, Good Will Hunting, Tsosti and Little Fish.
One of my favourite directors is Andrea Arnold, loved her feature film Fish Tank starring Michael Fassbender, her social conscience realism is what I aspire for in my own screen stories since seeing her Oscar winning and Cannes winning short film WASP. Exploring social conscience stories is my focus whether studio indie or Hollywood/ Bollywood blockbuster popcorn fare. My debut feature film 'Becoming Elvis' that I will direct in 2018, release in 2019 is allegorically the story of myself and my Daughters, as an alienated Father. It will be my gift of love to my beautiful Daughters.
I intend to explore a PhD (Film) between 2018-2021 via a scholarship at Melbourne University, Insha Allah, whilst I build my production companies into Global Profitability as a working filmmaker. I want to explore the stories of the socially marginalised and oppressed and bring Islamic stories to the screen. In doing so I will create greater awareness of Islam, but I will do without propaganda, show a balanced view. The purpose is to build bridges, mitigate misunderstanding, corrode prejudice and help reduce Islamophobia. Ignorance fosters Xenophobia. This is my life passion. 'To create a positive difference in the lives of the socially marginalised and oppressed through storytelling' is my company mantra. Allah is the best of Planners. Whilst this is my nayaat, if it is my taqdeer then it will be so; if not, then whatever Allah deems best for me, will be great!
'They plan but Allah plans better, for Allah is the best of Planners' (3:54).
I made an award winning social conscience short film (won 7 awards) via the Australian Film Commission.
YOU TUBE: KHATABAH
There is a woman in a Niqaab in the opening scene.
The Quran and the Bible (The Old Testament).
Halaal food. Indian, Lebanese, Italian, mainly spicey foods. I have taken up cooking as a hobby, find it meditative and it is great to make something that tastes great. I am only a beginner, but I have successfully progressed beyond peanut buttered toast, I now add jam to it as well. ;)
Michael Jackson. Madonna. Prince. Classical Music- Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Ravel. Rachmaninov 18th Variation is my favourite classical piece (it is the theme music to Somewhere in Time). Lionel Richie.
Neat, Tidy. Conservative or street cred, depending on my mood. I really am not a fashion slave, I wear what i like, not to impress others, I am me as I am.
Dry and whacky, over the top, out there! Can you tell?
Reading. Sports. Travelling. Film Maker. Watching Movies. Attending Theatre. Script Writer. Charity (or humanitarian) Work. Making wild passionate love... ahum ... just snuck this in for good measure, can't be too serious and boring all the time, all within the constraints of a nikaah (ofcourse). :)
Eastern Europe (Serbia and Romania), India. Would like to travel more: China, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, France, England, Spain and of course Hajj Insha Allah. I have travelled on a world tour to many countries with my Parents on their belated honeymoon when I was 5 years old. That would be a great idea for my next honeymoon, though hopefully not as belated as my parents!
Very open minded to intercultural relationships. It all comes down to effective communication, honesty, respect and appreciation. Celebrate and embrace difference, seeking the same is very boring and Narcissistic. I am not a fan of mirrors. I love experiencing new cultures and I love a woman who is from a different culture, it is so enriching! Prophet (King) Solomon (Suleyman), the wisest of all men, had 300 wives and 500 concubines (according to the old testement in the Bible) of various backgrounds, so who am I to argue against his wisdom? However unlike Solomon, I am strictly in favour of one woman only, I do not ascribe to polygamy in any way, shape or form! I am too Romantic to share. :)
A weekend away in an apartment by the Ocean, swim at the beach, watch some movies, candle light dinner, make love- just seeing if you are paying attention! But it is all good, if there is a nikaah, it is halal, even if it is 'out there' to say it. Right? ;)
Pleasant, fun to be around, Gentle. Witty. Laid Back. Most people say that it seems like they have known me all their lives after only a few days of knowing me. I guess it is because i love connecting with people. So how about we connect, what do you have to lose? :)
A Muslima who is themselves and not pressured or ruled by other peoples opinions. A Muslima who is real (many fakers online). A Muslima who fears Allah and always tells the truth. Having experienced great deception and evil from liars in my past, a lie is a deal breaker. I prefer the truth, as brutal and painful as it may be, it is far better than even a white lie. Truth builds trust and trust engenders love. I value transparency and honesty, it builds a foundation of emotional security. Kindness is so rare. Be kind. Jazaka Allah Kheyran for taking the time to read my entire profile. May Allah inspire into your heart as to whom is your Naseeb. As Salaam Alaykum.
